What Is California Sober?

People today are a lot more open and honest when talking about their struggles with addiction dependence. You may have heard the phrase “California sober” in the news, online, and even in your own life.

How Is California Sober Defined?

While definitions can vary, California sober typically means that a person avoids alcohol and so-called “hard” drugs (like cocaine and heroin) but does partake in marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms, which are categorized as “soft” drugs. In some instances, California sober can also include a moderate intake of alcohol.

Does This Approach Really Work for Addiction Recovery?

Addiction is a complex illness, and it’s possible that some people can maintain their physical and mental health while being California sober. However, many people with substance abuse issues won’t find success with this strategy, as it can facilitate risky behaviors in a way that full sobriety wouldn’t.

People who struggle with substance abuse may also experience a “slippery slope” where substances occur. That could mean that one instance of substance use, even when moderate, could lead to more dangerous substances and frequent lapses.
