A Guide to Kratom and Its Risks

Kratom has been gaining popularity over the years for its supposed benefits. The plant extract can be found in many stores all over the U.S. and can be purchased by just about anyone (though some states have imposed age limits to prevent children from using it).

What Is Kratom?

Kratom is an herbal supplement that can be taken orally, often in the form of a pill or liquid. It’s extracted from a tree native to Southeast Asia, where people typically use the leaves for their purported medicinal purposes. However, products sold in the U.S. are unregulated and can contain unknown and sometimes harmful ingredients.

Does It Offer Benefits?

People who use kratom claim numerous benefits. The drug can reportedly act like a stimulant in low doses, while larger doses elicit a feeling of euphoria. Some people also claim that kratom can benefit those dependent on opioids, as it allows them to wean from the drug.

What Are the Risks?

Despite kratom’s purported benefits, the risks outweigh any potential reward. Like opioids, kratom carries a risk of dependency and abuse. And while they’ve been few in number, some people have lost their lives after consuming the drug. Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Vomiting
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver damage
  • Trouble breathing

Use of kratom can also affect mental health and potentially lead to depression and other disorders.
