What to Expect During Recovery

When you finally make the decision to seek treatment for opioid dependency or drug addiction, you may feel liberated, motivated and confident. To successfully progress in your treatment program, though, you need to be prepared for what comes next, and it isn’t always comfortable. The team at Duke City Recovery Toolbox in Albuquerque, New Mexico is with you every step of the way and will provide all the medical, emotional, and spiritual support you need to keep you on your path to sobriety.

What Feelings to Expect

Every person’s recovery process is different. No two people will experience the same physical sensations or emotions. However, there seems to be one common theme in everyone’s early stages of recovery—physical and emotional discomfort.

Here’s what you may experience:

Physical discomfort
If you are eligible for medication-assisted treatment, our goal is to prevent withdrawal symptoms as we adjust your medication dosage to stabilize your body and brain functions. Still, you may experience mild physical symptoms, such as:

    • Muscle aches
    • Sweating
    • Insomnia

Emotional discomfort
For many people, drugs were used for a coping mechanism. With that strategy no longer available, you may experience:

    • Irritability
    • Anxiety
    • Mood swings

Because physical and emotional discomfort in the early stages of recovery is common, we develop treatment programs that provide frequent access to our therapists so that you can get the support you need to get through the most challenging first few days.

What Changes in Treatment to Expect

As you progress in your recovery journey, your treatment will need to change, too. Some changes you may expect include:

  • Shift in therapy focus—for instance, participating in family therapy if you or your family wish to heal a relationship damaged by drug addiction or talking to a peer support specialist to build a health support system.
  • Increase in medication management responsibility—earning the privilege of at-home doses
  • Preparation for titrating-off—mental and medical preparation to live completely free of substances

No change in treatment will ever be suggested or implemented before you are ready or without your consent.

How to Cope during Early Recovery

Coping with the discomfort you may expect during early recovery can be relieved simply by knowing what’s coming. Duke City Recovery Toolbox provides psychoeducation to help you understand addiction and addiction recovery. Participants may also request treatment medication dosage adjustments (increases or decreases) to achieve stability and comfort. In addition to counseling services, we also have Bible study groups that can provide support from those who have been through a similar experience.

Contact us to start your journey to recovery. You may schedule an intake appointment or walk-in for an assessment between 6:00 and 8:00 am Monday through Thursday.

Duke City Recovery Toolbox will help you understand what to expect during your recovery process and provide the support you need to get through it.
